Chip on Board also known as COB LED displays are LEDs formed by multiple tiny chips bonded to the substrate creating a single module. These LEDs are not traditionally packaged and take up less space than conventional ones. This technology  also reduces the heat generated by the chips and as a result solves the problem of heat dissipation.

COB is literally similar to GOB display technology, but in fact it is a completely different chip packaging technology. It is Chip on board. All chips are directly integrated and packaged on a dedicated PCB board. The traditional packaging technology is to integrate three RGB LED chips in a single gel to produce a single SMD (Surface-mounted-diode) ?

In fact, its development has been for a long time, and it has already begun to be used in small-pitch displays in batches.

Earlier on ISE 2017, SiliconCore released its 1.9mm COB LED display. At ISE 2018, Daktronics, Absen, Ledman, and Changchun Cedar released their COB fine pitch display and rental series. In ISLE 2020, 2021, they have launched more product series.

Compared with the traditional SMD small-pitch display, the COB display not only has a wider viewing angle (close to 180°), higher contrast, lower power consumption, higher brightness, but also has anti-collision, High protection performance such as moisture-proof and dust-proof.

More importantly, the COB technology makes it possible to have a smaller pitch LED large screen. At present, P0.4, P0.7, and P0.9 have been mass-produced.

However, the current cost of COB technology is high. In addition to cost, COB needs to invest a lot of effort in consistency. On the one hand, there are challenges in the process of wavelength separation and color separation of all chips on the board, which makes it difficult to obtain perfect color uniformity between modules. In addition, the reflection effect of the module surface and the black difference under the black screen.

The maintenance of COB is also a problem to be solved.

GOB is an improvement of traditional SMD technology, it can be used for all pitch displays.  COB display is currently mainly used in the small pitch LED display P0.4~P1.5. This pitch range screen now is also called Mini LED display. Obviously, COB technology will be also the mainstream solution for micro-pitch displays in the future. 

These LEDs offer wide viewing angle and less light loss because of the fact that these additional packaging or lenses are not used in conventional models.

Pros

Some of the pros of COB LED Display are,

COB LEDs are compact since the chips are bonded together and no extra lenses and packaging is involved. This largely reduces the size and saves a lot of space.

COB LEDs have higher light efficiency than conventional LEDs

Lighting effect on these LEDs is improved than traditional models.

Heat generated by chips is reduced and no heat dissipation occurs

Only one circuit is required.

Since the welding points are fairly fewer than traditional models, there is less risk of failure in these LEDs

Cons

Some of the cons of COB LED Display are

1,Color uniformity is difficult to achieve for the whole display due to light splitting between the chips.

2,As the size of chip increases, the light efficiency of the chips and LED is decreased.

The color variety is very limited.

3,Applications of COB LED DISPLAY TECHNOLOGY

Some of the applications of COB Technology are,

1,COB Technology can be used in Street lights to increase the light’s efficacy .

2,LED Lamps used in homes can often generate a lot of heat, taking up a lot of power and heating up the house. COB technology can be used in these LED lamps to reduce the power consumption and heat dissipation.

3,COB technology can be used in playground lighting since they operate with higher efficiency and have a wider viewing angle.

4,COB LED technology can be used in smartphone camera flash to get better photo results.
